Jerks of Grass

No Comments2 May 1:14

Jerks of Grass are a high-energy bluegrass quartet from Portland, Maine. Gathered around one microphone in the traditional style, over the past decade New England’s Jerks of Grass have become a formidable purveyor of their own brand of bluegrass music. With one foot in the traditional and the other in progressive roots music, Jerks of Grass have forged a sound all their own.

The band’s debut album “Come On Home” is set to be released on August 1st. Recorded by engineer/producer Jonathan Wyman (Rustic Overtones, As Fast As, 6gig), Jerks of Grass completed mastering at the famed Gateway Mastering Studios with Grammy award-winning engineer Adam Ayan. Recorded live in one room with no overdubs and staying true to the band’s live show, the album features mix of original songs including the title track “Come On Home”, old bluegrass standards and high-energy newgrass instrumentals.

Priding themselves on tight arrangements, stellar musicianship, and an ability to delight even the most suspicious of audiences, it is no surprise that the Jerks have remained one of the area’s busiest acts for over ten years. Voted Portland’s Best Roots/Acoustic act seven times, they are tireless performers, having played over 1200 shows throughout New England. They can be found as supporting acts for legends like Dr. Ralph Stanley & his Clinch Mountain Boys, performing at festivals and events near and far – these guys live to play live!

Jerks of Grass features founding members Jason Phelps (guitar/mandolin/vocals), and acoustic music veteran Carter Logan (banjo/dobro/guitar). Rounding out the group are newest members Kris Day (upright & electric bass) who has toured the U.S. with artists like Link Wray & Ronnie Dawson and fiery fiddler Melissa Bragdon who’s speed is matched only by her style and versatility.
